Today Riot announced that Ruined King: A League of Legends Story as it's officially named will go into full release on Steam and the Epic Games Store in early 2021.

The trailer launches alongside a new site giving us a peek at the League Of Legends characters and locales getting special attention from the turn-based RPG. So far it looks like we’ll be commanding a party formed of Miss Fortune Illaoi Braum Yasuo Ahri and Pyke as they pit themselves against a mysterious black mist. We’ll spend some time in Bilgewater biffing up pirates and scoundrels it seems before heading off to the subtly-named Shadow Isles for some properly supernatural nonsense.

The release will be the first game from Riot Games’ new indie publishing label Riot Forge Ruined King A LOL Story Account which was announced last year as part of a new initiative to partner with other developers to expand the League of Legends universe into new games and genres.

While the trailer gave the distinct vibe of a beat’em up Ruined King is actually a turn-based RPG being developed by Airship Syndicate the studio behind Darksiders Genesis and before that Battle Chasers: Nightwar. It’s a partnership that makes sense on paper although in practice hopefully Ruined King intended to be a “completable” single-player adventure won’t be as grindy as Nightwar.

Ruined King: A League of Legends Story will be set in two regions of Runeterra: the port town of Bilgewater home to monster hunters dock gangs and smugglers and the Shadow Isles shrouded in the deadly Black Mist that corrupts all it touches. Players will form a party including League of Legends characters Miss Fortune Illaoi Braum Yasuo Ahri and Pyke in order to defeat a mysterious common enemy.
